Description

Winter Savory is a hardy semi-evergreen perennial herb from the mint family. It keeps its leaves in mild winters, which means it can be picked all year round. It is a compact plant reaching 30cm tall by 20cm wide, is easy to grow and requires little attention once established.

It has small leaves and small white flowers with a pinky/purple tinge. The leaves have a peppery flavour, similar to thyme and perfect to grow in pots.

The summer flowers also attract bees and other pollinating insects.

When to Sow Sow indoors March to May.
Where to Sow Grows best in light well drained soil, in a sunny position.
Sow seeds indoors 1/2cm(1/4in) deep in barely moist seed compost in pots or trays.
Cover with a sprinkle of finely sieved compost as they need light to germinate and maintain at a temperature of 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F).
What to do Next When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots and harden off the plants for 7 to 10 days.
Plant them outside in their final growing position once the risk of frost has passed, 30cm (12in) apart.
Whilst the plant is still young keep the compost moist however once established do not overwater.
Harvest All year round once established.
Handy Tips The stems do become woody with age so it is good to regularly pick the stems to ensure fresh new growth.
