Description
Pansy 'Swiss Giant Mixed' as its name suggest produces a striking display of large flowers in rich colours. The flowers come in shades of shades of violet, yellow, scarlet, dark blue and white all with a contrasting blotch.
These pansies will bloom in the garden up to for up six months during autumn, winter and spring and will happily reward you with colour when many plants cannot. They are also a good companion plant for the vegetable garden.
Pansies are classed as short-term perennials, however you will eventually need to replace any lost through extremes of temperatures or loss of flowering vigour, so sowing these from seed each year is a cost effective way to enjoy their beauty every year.
When to sow | Sow indoors Jan to May for flowering the same year, or outdoors May to August for winter/spring flowering the following year. |
Sow indoors thinly on the surface of moist compost filled pots or trays and cover the seeds with 0.5cm (1/4in) of very fine compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal).
Where to sow | Sow direct where they are to flower 0.5cm (¼in) deep, into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. |
What to do next | For seeds sown indoors, when seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions. |
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 20cm (8in) apart.
Thin direct sown seedlings to 20cm (8in) apart when they are large enough to handle
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds.
Flowering period | January to November. |
Handy tips | Allow some of the summer flowering pansies to run to seed and they will self propagate and produce seedlings the following spring. |
Companion planting | Attracts predatory insects for aphids and deters many pests of the cucurbit family. |
Uses | Beds and borders, window boxes, hanging baskets and pots or containers. |
Height | 20cm (8in) |
Spread | 20cm (8in) |
