Description
Red Sun is an easy to grow Sunflower, with its dark red flowers on top of tall stems. This variety is brilliant for back borders and makes for a beautiful cut flower in your home. It will reach an approximate height of 1.8m (6ft) and the flowers can reach a diameter of up to 10cm.
When to sow | Indoors February to March, and outdoors April to May. |
Where to sow | Sunflowers need full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day - the more the better if you are trying to grow them to their maximum potential) and are best sown direct where they are to flower. |
For earlier blooms sow indoors in pots, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and keep at 13 to 18°C (55 to 65°F) until after germination.
Sow outdoors direct, either in pots or in a flower bed, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and 45cm (18in) apart.
What to do next | When the risk of frost has passed, transplant seedlings sown indoors to final flowering position after hardening off for 7 to 10 days. |
Protect young plants from slugs with a cloche.
Water the plants regularly and apply a liquid fertiliser when the plants are 60cm (2ft) tall.
As the plant grows provide support, in the form of canes or trellis, if they are in an exposed windy position.
Flowering period | July to September |
Companion planting | Good companion plant for peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. |
Uses | Useful in the border or as a cut flower. Attracts Bees and Butterflies. |
Height | 1.8m (6ft) |
Spread | 45cm (18in) |
