Description
Larkspur 'Giant imperial mix' produce feathery spires of brightly coloured flowers which will bring height and structure to a bed or border all summer and make good cut flowers.
These hardy annuals tolerate most soils and situations and sowing them in waves or curves, rather than straight lines, will create a stunning display. The colours range from deep blue to pale blue, pink, lilac and white.
When to sow | Sow indoors February to May, or outside in March to May and August to September. |
Sow indoors thinly in compost filled pots or trays, 0.5cm (¼in) deep and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
Where to sow | Sow direct where they are to flower 0.5cm (¼in) deep into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. |
What to do next | For seeds sown indoors, when seedlings are large enough to handle and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 40cm (16in) apart. |
Water well until plants are established.
Thin direct sown seedlings to 40cm (16in) apart when they are large enough to handle
As flower stalks grow taller they may need staking.
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds.
Flowering period | June to October. Autumn sowings will flower earlier the following spring. |
Handy tips | For a continuous display, make sowings at two to three-week intervals. |
Harvest cut flowers anytime during the flowering period.
Allow some of the flowers to run to seed and they will self propagate and produce seedlings the following spring.
Uses | Beds and borders, make excellent cut flowers. |
Height | 90cm (36in) |
Spread | 40cm (16in) |
