Description
Lavender 'Hidcote Blue' is a popular, compact variety with a fantastic scent and striking deep purple-blue flower spikes which emerge from silver-grey foliage in mid summer.
Lavender Hidcote is great for attracting bees and butterflies, using as a culinary herb or drying for craft purposes. Once established it is very low maintenance and requires just a quick trim, after flowering, to encourage new growth and to keep it neat and tidy.
Ideal for creating a cottage garden effect or for using as low-growing soft hedging, It was named after Hidcote Manor Gardens in Gloucestershire and has been awarded a RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
When to sow | Indoors February to June. |
Where to sow | Sow indoors on the surface of compost filled pots or trays and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 15-20°C (59-68°F) is ideal). |
Seedlings usually appear between 21 to 42 days.
What to do next | When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions. |
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 45cm (18in) apart.
Water well until plants are established, but do not overwater as they will not tolerate water logging.
Lavenders should be pruned every year to keep them in a tidy shrub form. Pruning or trimming should be done each year in late summer, as soon as the blooms have faded, so that the bushes have time to make a little new growth before winter.
French Lavender is hardy to approx. -5°C (23°F) in well-drained soil and sheltered position. Protection with a winter mulch of straw or peat is beneficial if temperatures are likely to fall below this.
Flowering period | July to September (following year). |
Companion Planting | Attracts Bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. |
Uses | Bedding and borders, especially edging. |
Height | 30-45cm (12-18in). |
Spread | 45-60cm (18-24in). |
