Description
Lobelia 'Fountain Formula Mixed' is a trailing variety in shades of pink, blue, purple and white.
The fountains series (annual variety) has been specially bred to provide a mass of larger flowers and broader leaves which means that it provides a fuller cascade when used in hanging baskets, window boxes and cascades. It will provide a vibrant display from early summer to the first frosts in autumn.
When to sow | Indoors February to April. |
Sow thinly on the surface of moist compost filled pots or trays. Lobelia seeds are very small, mixing the seeds with silver sand may help a more even distribution of seeds.
Where to sow | Do not cover them with soil as they need light to germinate. Lightly press the seeds into the compost. Place in a warm position (temperature of 15 to 20°C (60 to 70°F) is ideal). |
What to do next | When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant small clumps of 4-5 seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on in cooler conditions. |
When all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 25cm (10in) apart.
Always water lobelia seeds and seedlings from the bottom, so the water will not disturb the small seeds and to minimise the risk of damping off.
Flowering period | June to October. |
Uses | Good hanging baskets, window boxes, pots and containers. |
Height | 15cm (6in) |
Spread | 25cm (10in) |
