Description
Monarda didyma 'Panorama Red' also known as bee balm is a superb variety with distinctive deep red flower heads.
Each plant bears up to 20 long stems. They bloom profusely, are as long-lasting as they are dramatic and are excellent for cutting. They are also extremely attractive to bees and butterflies.
The plant has a long flowering season, from early summer to early autumn, and will bloom almost continuously if dead-headed periodically.
When to sow | Sow indoors February to April, or outside in March to May and August and September. |
Sow indoors thinly in compost filled pots or trays, 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
Where to sow | Sow direct where they are to flower 0.5cm (¼in) deep, into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. |
What to do next |
For seeds sown indoors, when seedlings are large enough to handle and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise indoor raised seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 30cm (12in) apart. |
Water well until plants are established.
Thin direct sown seedlings to 30cm (12in) apart when they are large enough to handle
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds.
Flowering period | June - September. Autumn sowings will flower earlier the following spring. |
Harvest cut flowers anytime during the flowering period.
Clumps should be divided every three years to remove excess woody growth which will over time retard good growth.
Uses | Beds and borders, make excellent cut flowers. Can be grown in pots and containers too. |
Height | 75cm (30in) |
Spread | 30cm (12in) |
