When to sow | February to May (February to March inside and April to May outside) |
Where to Sow | Sunflowers need full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day - the more the better if you are trying to grow them to their maximum potential) and are best sown direct where they are to flower. |
For earlier blooms sow indoors in pots, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and keep at 13 to 18°C (55 to 65°F) until after germination.
Sow outdoors direct, either in pots or in a flower bed, 1.5cm (3/4in) deep and 30cm (12in) apart.
What to do Next | When the risk of frost has passed, transplant seedlings sown indoors to final flowering position after hardening off for 7 to 10 days. |
Protect young plants from slugs with a cloche.
Water the plants regularly especially during dry periods.
