Description
Cosmos 'Candystripe' has unique and striking large white flowers with petals that are striped, splashed and edged with crimson - with no two flowers alike.
Cosmos are easy to grow annual flowers which will produce a bright bloom all summer long, right through until late October and are ideal for cut flowers.
The bees and butterflies love them too!
When to sow | Sow indoors March to April or outdoors April to May. |
Where to sow | Sow indoors in moist compost filled pots or trays 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm position (temperature of 15-20°C (60-68°F) is ideal). |
Sow direct outdoors in flowering position 0.5cm (1/4in) deep.
What to do next | For seeds sown indoors, when seedlings are large enough to handle and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Then transplant into final growing position planting them 30cm (12in) apart. |
Thin the seedlings sown outdoors out so they are 30cm (12in) apart. Carefully replant thinned plants to fill any gaps.
Water well until plants are established.
Deadhead to prolong flowering and encourage new flower buds.
Handy tips | Pinch out the growing tip of each stem when transplanting to encourage stems to branch and produce more Cosmos flowers. |
Flowering period | June to October. |
Uses | Ideal for cut flowers and as a tall flower at the back of a border. |
Height | 75cm (30in) |
Spread | 30cm (12in) |
