When to sow | Indoors February to May. |
Where to sow | Sow on the surface of moist compost and cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. |
Place in a warm position (temperature of 18 to 20°C (65 to 68°F) is ideal) or place in a heated propagator.
Keep the compost moist and do not exclude light as this helps germination.
What to do next | Once germination takes place, move into cooler conditions to grow on. |
Once the risk of frost has passed, harden off for 7 to 10 days and then transplant seedlings into final growing position planting them 30cm (12in) apart.
Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails.
Keep well watered especially during dry periods.
Flowering period | July to October |
Handy tips | Deadheading flowers will prolong the flowering season. |
After the first frosts when the foliage has died back, remove the tubers from the ground, place in a cardboard box and store in a garage or greenhouse to 'overwinter'. Replant the following spring once the risk of frost has passed.
